Oasis Jazz U Festival

This month the Grand Oasis Cancun plays host to the 6th edition of the Oasis Jazz U festival and it’s another fantastic line-up of international artists. This edition focuses on smooth jazz and runs from the 18th to the 27th May.

Hiram Gomez and The Groove Machine Band – Kinky Night Club (Thursday 18th May)

Our good friends Hiram Gomez and his Groove Machine Band will return once again to perform at this festival, having performed in both 2015 and 2016 editions. They will be opening the festival on Thursday 18th May in the intimate surroundings of the resorts Kinky Night Club, just next door to our Arena. Some of you may have seen Hiram and his band before as they often play in our resorts.

Marcus Miller – Oasis Arena (Saturday 20th May)

We welcome American jazz artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller to the Oasis Arena on Saturday 20th May. The two-time Grammy award winner has worked with such luminary artists as Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin and was also part of the Saturday Night Live band. The New York native, best known for playing the bass guitar, brings his funky sound to the Arena stage for what is expected to be a great night of jazz.

Performing before Marcus is Cuban artist and Cancun resident Daniel Peñalver. Daniel is no stranger to the Oasis Arena having performed saxophone with his Latin Project at last year’s Cancun International Music Festival of which he was also artistic director.

Esperanza Spalding – Oasis Arena (Saturday 27th May)

American jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding graces the Arena stage on Saturday 27th May. Raised in Portland, Oregon, Spalding was a child prodigy playing violin in the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at five years old. Now 32, she has released five solo albums and has won four Grammy awards including Best New Artist in 2011. In her performances she alternates between double bass and electric bass and sings in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Also playing on the night are Troker, a jazz and psychedelic six-piece hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico. They mix traditional jazz sounds with rock and even turntabling to create their signature modern style.

The festival is for a good cause as part of the proceeds goes towards the Oasis Foundation, our charity that helps support many local goodwill organizations. Ticket prices are as follows:

  • Oasis guests: VIP Section $700 pesos (includes snacks and drinks)
  • Oasis guests: General Section $400 pesos
  • External guests/locals: VIP Section $900 pesos (includes snacks and drinks)
  • External guests/locals: General Section $600 pesos

Tickets can be purchased online at oasishoteles.com/en/events/upcoming-events, the Grand Oasis Cancun, Smart by Oasis hotel and all Café Nader coffee shops in Cancun city.

‘The Entertainment Resort’ looks forward to welcoming you for what promises to be another great jazz festival!

Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to popular belief by many abroad, cinco de mayo (May 5th) is not Mexico’s day of independence but rather the day commemorating the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on 5th May 1862. Mexico’s Independence Day is 16th September and unlike this day, cinco de mayo is not observed as a national holiday. Stores, offices, and banks are all open, and many people go about their business as usual, with only public schools closing nationwide.

The battle took place between a powerful and better-equipped French army, who were chasing unpaid debts and looking to expand their empire, against a much smaller Mexican force. General Ignacio Zaragoza’s Mexican troops were able to withstand attacks by General Charles Latrille de Lorencez’s 6,000 strong French force. Close to 500 French soldiers were killed in the battle, while the Mexicans lost fewer than 100 men. The Battle of Puebla came to represent courage and bravery against the odds and became a source of pride.

It is in the city of Puebla where the largest celebrations can be found. A large parade takes place where thousands of locals gather and dress as French and Mexican soldiers to reenact the war. After the Mexican troops win, celebrations begin with music, dancing and food. Mexico City also hosts a big parade with dancing, singing and re-enactments.

Apart from tacos, which is always a popular food at any Mexican celebration, the dish most commonly consumed on this day is Puebla’s own mole poblano; a thick brown sauce made of chilies and other spices and herbs, normally served over chicken or turkey and accompanied by rice.

It is in the United States where Cinco de Mayo is more widely and fervently celebrated, particularly in cities with large Mexican communities like Los Angeles, San Diego and San Antonio where Mexican-Americans have continued this celebration as homage to their roots.

Take a Mayan spa treatment

Our hotel’s offer a range of spa treatments which are regularly praised by our guests. One such treatment is the pre-Hispanic steam house called temazcal, which derives from the Nahuatl words ‘temaz’ meaning steam and ‘calli’ meaning house. This group treatment incorporates ancient rituals with song and music and is filled with symbology. Its shape represents the womb of mother earth and the ceremony works with the four elements; earth, water, air and fire to purify and harmonize mind, body and spirit. The treatment helps eliminate toxins from the body, purifies the blood, cleanses the airways and relieves tension and stress, promoting mental clarity.
