Spring Break 2017

It’s nearly that time of year again when we welcome thousands of students to the sun-drenched Grand Oasis Cancun; the heart of Cancun’s Spring Break celebrations. This year we have our biggest event yet, from February 4th to April 14th our Beach Club welcomes some of the biggest names in dance so we’ve prepared you a guide to who will be performing to get you in the partying mood.

4 – Cazzette

We begin our celebrations with Cazzette, a Swedish dance music duo formed in 2011 by Alexander Björklund and Sebastian Furrer. Their style mixes progressive house with electro and dubstep. They have worked with fellow countryman and DJ Avicii who signed them to his record label LE7ELS and have also released a track remixing The Killers’ song Shot at Night. They usually perform wearing giant cassettes over their heads.

11 – Otto Knows

Also hailing from Sweden, Otto Knows is a DJ and record producer who has also worked with Avicii as well as Britney Spears. Perhaps best known for his 2012 single Million Voices which reached number 14 in the UK singles chart, Otto Knows has been a regular on the electronic scene since 2010.

18 – Arty

On the 18 of February we welcome back Russian DJ and record producer Arty who performed at our Oasis Dance U Spring Break event in 2015. Arty has collaborated with some of the biggest names in dance music like Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyke and has also released remixes of One Republic’s song I Lived and London Grammar’s Hey Now.

We end the month of February with German DJ and producer Thomas Gold. Thomas began his career in 2000 producing trance tracks but has since moved into progressive house and tech house in more recent years.

4 – Krewella

Chicago sister act Krewella kick off our March Spring Break activities. The singing and DJing duo bring their EDM sound to our Beach Club and hope that you will be singing (or at least screaming) along with them.

11 – Lil Jon

Five years after first performing at We welcome back the king of crunk Lil Jon who performed at our Spring Break event in 2012. We’re sure he’ll get the place bouncing again on the 11th with his inimitable larger-than-life style. Lil Jon and his group The East Side Boyz shot to worldwide fame with the song Get Low, since then he has worked with and produced songs for some of the biggest names in music like Snoop Dogg, Usher and Steve Aoki.

Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf make up dutch duo Blasterjaxx. The big room house DJs have collaborated with EDM acts like David Guetta, Dmitri Vegas & Like Mike and Afrojack. Since 2015 Thom has performed solo though the pair continue to produce music together.

In late 2013 Paul passed away while Maarten has continued to DJ under the same name like Paul had wanted.

14 – Chuckie

We end our Oasis Dance U Spring Break celebrations with Surinamese DJ Chuckie and his Dirty Dutch house sound, primarily defined by complex rhythms made from Latin-influenced drum kits, a lower emphasis on basslines, and squeaky, high-pitched lead synths and a genre he has helped pioneer with his own record label of the same name. Chuckie has also remixed songs for Michael Jackson and David Guetta, and has produced for 50 Cent, Kesha and Akon.

That’s Entertainment

At Oasis Hotels & Resorts we pride ourselves on the entertainment we offer our guests, from daily shows to live concerts and sporting events. Located in the Grand Oasis Cancun (The Entertainment Resort), the recently expanded Oasis Arena plays host to many of these events and has quickly become a heavyweight in Cancun entertainment.

The home of Cancun boxing

Boxing is not only popular in Mexico; at Oasis it has also taken centre stage on many occasions. Previous world champions such as ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, Jhonny Gonzalez and Juan Carlos Salgado have thrilled spectators with their pugilistic prowess at the Arena, and last March the venue made boxing history as host to the first female heavyweight world title fight in Mexico. Last December work was completed on its expansion doubling its capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 for showcasing fights and cementing itself as the home of Cancun boxing and an important venue for national and international bouts.

Boxing is not the only contact sport that has been held at the Arena, in 2013 a night of mixed martial arts took place with Mexican champions taking on their American counterparts for an exhilarating night in the cage. With its recent expansion, even larger sporting events are in the pipeline.

Music to your ears

Since its inauguration in 2012, the venue has played host to the annual Oasis Jazz U festival bringing together not only renowned jazz artists but also international artists from other musical genres such as Gloria Gaynor, Chaka Khan and Eddie Palmieri. In 2014 the festival payed homage to Spanish flamenco guitarist and local resident Paco de Lucia who had passed away a few months earlier. Friends and family took to the stage for what were three emotionally charged nights celebrating the life of this flamenco legend, with ticket proceeds going to the Oasis Foundation charity.

Following the success of 2012’s Coyote Country Festival in the Coyote Loco bar at Grand Oasis Cancun the following year a similar event was held in the Arena. The Oasis Country Cancun Fest brought stars from the country music scene to the Mexican Caribbean for five nights of pure Americana.

Oasis and its Arena also played host to several concerts of last year’s Cancun International Music Festival, including both the opening and closing ceremony. Highlights included Mexico’s Women’s Symphonic Orchestra and 10-time Grammy award winning artist Arturo Sandoval who graced the stage delighting audiences with exceptional performances.

On the rare occurrence of heavy rain, even the odd Spring Break event has been moved to the Arena creating an electric atmosphere and making sure the weather doesn’t dampen the revellers spirits.

The future’s bright

The Oasis Arena currently hosts four weekly shows free for all guests to attend; Wonderland, Viva Mexico, Cabaret Latino and Cuban Explosion Night performed by our professional entertainment team and giving you a flavour of what our hotels have to offer.

The newly expanded venue looks forward to hosting even bigger events and welcoming you for an unforgettable night of glitz and glamour and fantastic entertainment!
